The Alkimos Beach Sprout Hub opened its doors in June 2014 as a three-year pilot project offering a community space to the development’s first residents. The intention, to create ‘a little place, for a little while’ aimed to bridge the gap between the first residents moving in and the social amenities and infrastructure establishing.

Since 2014, the Alkimos Beach community has grown from six houses and 20 residents into a thriving community of 650 houses and 1,500 residents with an active surf club, two schools, eight completed parks and a retail precinct.

Sprout Ventures CEO, Bridie Ritchie says Alkimos Beach has been a terrific place to start this first-of-its kind community project.

“Thanks to the support and engagement of our community, the Sprout Hub has been a great example of a creative, grassroots solution delivered through a partnership between our small start-up and Alkimos Beach project partners Lendlease and LandCorp,” Bridie said. “Over the first three years of the project, we have seen excellent social outcomes for the community, and are happy to continue this work at the Sprout Hub’s original location until the end of 2018.”

The Hub’s goal was to increase opportunities for social connection, support local community groups and businesses, and provide a place for residents to participate in local community matters. In the first three years, $38,372 has been generated from the community and distributed to local groups, through the Seedling Fund, 214 events with 4,534 participants have been delivered and 21,054 coffees have been served to the budding Alkimos Beach community.

The good news doesn’t stop there! Following Sprout Hub’s extended residency at Escarpment Park, it is simply moving across the road to Alkimos Vista, a new sister community by Lendlease and LandCorp, to continue supporting Alkimos Beach locals and their future neighbours in Alkimos Vista.

“We are very excited to continue serving the greater Alkimos community,” Hayley McCallum, Hub Host, said. “As a local myself, I’ve witnessed how the Hub provides a great casual place for people to come together, attend events and make new friends. It has been a great thing to be a part of, and humbling to be a part of our locals’ days! The team and I are looking forward to the next 9 months in Escarpment Park, then excited to continue our work across the road at Alkimos Vista.”

Sprout Ventures designed the Sprout Hub model and has been operating the pilot project at Alkimos Beach.  Since launching the pilot, Sprout Ventures has launched Sprout Hubs in two other communities around Australia, with a third launching later this year. The model has received recognition as an innovation within the industry and as a great example of an impactful partnership approach to community development and provision of early community amenities.
